Nutrafol had a chat with Colin Sanders, a cosmetics tester and consultant with over 30 years’ experience in the topical pharmaceutical industry. Colin has come across a wide variety of products during his career. So we asked him the following: Are the majority of haircare products are safe to use? Is it possible that a harmful gel or wax could slip through the nets of the testers? And, can you go bald if you use them?

“It is very unlikely indeed”, says Sanders. “Affecting hair growth positively or negatively is a tough challenge. And even hard line pharmaceuticals like Minoxidil [an anti-hair loss drug] don’t have dramatic effects”, Sanders continues.

Hair products and the damage on your hair

Since the early nineties, all cosmetic products have had to pass a written assessment by a suitably-qualified person. So it would be quite unlikely for something harmful to slip through. The only way a product currently available on the market could damage your hair is if you used a dye to continually recolour your hair. This may make you more likely to develop an allergic reaction to the chemicals used in them and damage your scalp.

“But, even then”, Sanders stresses, “the risk would still be pretty low. I’m a chemist and I don’t find chemicals particularly scary in general. Hair products represent a pretty low level of exposure to chemicals compared to other things that we eat and breathe.”

There are other factors that determine if you are going to suffer from hair loss. And whilst gels, waxes and hairsprays may not be helping the issue, they certainly aren’t causing it. So what should men be concerned about if they want to hold onto a full head of hair? Nutrafol asked Vanessa Bailey, a consultant trichologist at The Hair Clinic in Westminster.

“However, there is a chance that dermatitis could develop if irritants are routinely massaged into the scalp”, she continues. And this can be detrimental to hair growth. “That is why you should just apply these products to the hair. Never the scalp”, she went on to tell us.
Gels and hairsprays are the worst offenders, Bailey points out. But there is still no need to completely steer away from these products. Simply look for lower-alcohol products and adhere to regular hair shampooing. And it helps to choose a supplement that is designed to provide you with the building blocks for healthy hair. Your best first line of defense, as always, is to consult with a medical professional. Ideally, one who specializes in hair issues, like a dermatologist, a hair restoration specialist or a trichologist.

Ideally, hair products should be washed out after twenty four hours, advises Bailey. “I always recommend that you should shampoo daily. If these products are left in longer than that, a build-up on the scalp is likely. And this build-up may cause an itchy, inflamed and scaly scalp.
I once came across a patient who ruined his hair with excessive use of hair gel. He applied the product on his hair every day. And he did not shampoo his hair for a period of three weeks. The lengths were so damaged by the time he finally shampooed his hair, that they needed to be cut off”. “However”, she continues, “this was only cosmetic damage, of course – and didn’t mean that he became more susceptible to baldness”.

When asked if they worry about thinning hair, 25 percent of the men in the survey answered yes. Which makes sense since hairstyles have been an important part of men’s lives for many decades. Hair thinning is genetic, and products cannot speed this process up in men or women“, Sallis continues.
“That said, if a man has a sensitive scalp – flaking or itchy – I would suggest that he stay away from gels and hairsprays. Gels and hairsprays contain high amounts of alcohol which can cause the scalp to dry out and exacerbate such conditions”, Sallis explains.

“Hair is a dead material, so you can only damage it like you can damage an item of clothing”, asserts Sallis.

“If you over-bleach or over-perm hair it will damage the fibres. But if you simply leave conditioner, gel, or another everyday product on it, the hair would not be damaged detrimentally.
I use a matte wax almost every day. These products simply coat your hair – and are then washed off on an evening, leaving your hair perfectly fine! The only patients I’ve ever come across who have ruined their hair with products are those who overuse bleaches. And in some cases perm lotions. But not those who use everyday products, Sallis continues.

In a previous post, Nutrafol wrote about the FDA releasing some very much needed information related to food and beauty products, especially when you want to prevent hair loss. The FDA does restrain the cosmetic industry from using certain ingredients, but it’s wise to check the labels on your beauty products just in case.

Your beauty products contain a lot of chemicals, many of which are absorbed into your body…and the industry is still highly unregulated. It’s a fact that there is no pre-product approval before a product hits the market and enters your home. Of course, there is a minuscule approval process that exists, but only for color additives and ingredients classified as over-the-counter drugs.

Also mentioned in a previous post, many of these chemicals are skin irritants, skin penetrators and carcinogenic. So, if you want to stay away from dangerous chemicals, have healthy hair and prevent hair loss, keep some of these in mind:

Parabens

Parabens are usually used as a preservative to prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast in cosmetic products, which doesn’t sound so bad as you might think. Well…think again. They’re more than that. Parabens possess estrogen properties that have been associated with increased risk of breast cancer. These chemicals are absorbed through the skin and have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumors. Parabens can be found in makeup, facial cleansers and shampoos. One way to avoid parabens is to make sure any beauty products you purchase are nutraceuticals. These are made strictly out of natural ingredients and no chemicals were added while producing them.

Fragrance

What does this category even mean? The term fragrance was created to protect a company’s secret formula. But for you as a consumer you could be putting on something containing chemicals dangerous for your health. According to the Enviromental Working Group (EWG) Skin Deep Database, fragrance mixes have been associated with allergies, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system. It can be found in many products, such as shampoos and conditioners.

Phthalates

This is a group of chemicals used in products to increase the flexibility and softness of plastic. They’re known to be endocrine disruptors and have been linked to increase the risk of breast cancer. Phthalates are not disclosed on every product as they’re added to products in fragrances. They can be found in deodorants, perfumes and hair sprays.

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)

This can be found in more than 90 percent of personal cleansing products. Think – nearly everything that foams contains this. SLS’ are known skin, lung and eye irritants. Combinations with other chemicals can also lead to issues such as kidney and respiratory damage. Your shampoo likely contains them so make sure to choose one that has been spared from SLS/SLES.

The latest buzzwords in beauty are paraben and sulfate, but it seems that nobody really tells you the reasons why. Why are parabens bad for you? Or sulfates? Why is it not good to have them as shampoo ingredients?

It’s known to us that we need to avoid them and many products today now include that statement in their marketing. But is the sulfate-free and paraben-free really that much better? Let us present the real down-low on parabens and sulfates before you decide which shampoo ingredients are bad for your hair and which are not.

They are chemicals found in beauty products

Parabens are chemicals that have been used since the 1950s to prevent bacteria. They act as a preservative in deodorants, lotions, lipsticks, shampoos, scrubs, and more. Sulfates, on the other hand, are effective cleansing and foaming agents. They can be found in toothpaste, shampoo and body washes, among other products.

They might be harmful

Yes, unfortunately studies have shown that some parabens can mimic the activity of the hormone estrogen in the body’s cells. Some estrogenic activity is associated with certain forms of breast cancer, and parabens have been found present in breast tumors. So…what about sulfates, then? Sulfates have many scientists concerned because they have been found to break down proteins, which can lead to a degenerative effect on cell membranes.

So far there is no scientific evidence to prove that parabens are linked to cancer. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review says that it is safe in up to a maximum concentration of 50 percent if they are properly rinsed off the skin.

Apply the safe not sorry routine

If you’re sweating just over the thought of using products that contain these chemicals – switch to something else. There’s a wide range of beauty products that are paraben- and sulfate-free. So how about ditching and switching?

Sulfate is not good if you want to keep your hair healthy

They can cause a number of problems such as drying out your hair, irritating your scalp, fading your color and in some cases even leading to hair loss.

Sulfate-free products are not necessarily better

The role sulfates play in your shampoo is to get rid of any build-up in your hair. However, with that they also take away natural oils, leaving your hair rough and dry. It’s important to keep in mind that just because a product is sulfate-free, it doesn’t mean that you still won’t run into these problems. Many beauty companies have swapped out sulfates for other chemicals, which in some cases can be even worse. So to make sure that sulfate-free products will not damage your hair, too – look for alternatives that use fruit or vegetable-based cleansing ingredients.

Use with a hint of self-control

Whatever you decide to do, balance and moderation is key. Rotate between different products to give your hair some rest every now and then.
