So what are edges?
For anyone not familiar, edges are the most revealed layer of hair surrounding the perimeter of the hairline. It’s the portion of hair, aside from ends, that’s most exposed, making edges the most susceptible to damage.

Most edge loss, according to curl specialist Ashley Hall, is caused directly by tension. “A general rule of healthy edges that everyone should consider is refraining from styles that cause a lot of tension on your edges,” she says. “Styles that are too heavy and cause tension can potentially damage your hair follicles, sometimes causing baldness in those areas. I think it’s also important to note that your edges need to be properly cleansed and moisturized like the rest of your hair.”
What styles contribute to edge loss?
Though many super sleek styles may appear pretty and are highly sought-after, they can be extremely detrimental to your hairline. “Some of the biggest mistakes people make with their edges are excessive tugging and pulling at the hairline with braids and slick back styles,” Hall says. “Too often I see women with thinning edges due to years of pulling their hair back to create sleek, polished styles. These styles can damage the hair follicles, resulting in a loss of hair, sometimes to the point where it no longer grows back, so we have to be careful and gentle.”
How do you regrow your edges after damage?
“Regrowing edges isn’t always certain, especially if the area is bald and shiny,” Hall warns of irreversible damage. “This might mean that the follicles are damaged to the point where the hair will no longer grow back. But if you have broken edges, you may [still] be able to salvage them.”
Many of the most effective products for renewed edge growth are all-natural. Check out these five natural alternatives to promote edge growth if yours are dwindling:
- Jamaican Black Castor Oil. A growingly popular product, Jamaican black castor oil — or JBCO, as it’s affectionately called — supports hair growth by cleansing the scalp of fungi and toxins that damage hair and slow growth. Warning: Don’t use too much, as the consistency of the product is extremely thick.
- Lavender Hair Oil. A 2016 study conducted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information found that when this essential oil was applied to mice, it made them grow more hair, and the hair growth rose at a rate much thicker and faster than normal.
- Rosemary Hair Oil. The healing herb has become known for many of its hair growth properties, its anti-inflammatory properties, promotion of nerve growth, and improving circulation. Massaging rosemary oil into the scalp may help kick-start regrowth.
