10 Tips – This Is How Easy You Could Prevent Hair Loss

10 Min Read

If you feel like you see more hair in the drain than usual, you are not alone. By as early as the age of 35, two-thirds of American men will experience hair loss. For women, about 40% suffer from hair loss by the age of 40. But as long as there is no underlying medical issue, you can normally prevent hair loss. What causes the problem will determine what you can do to get rid of it. But there are many options you can try if you are not yet sure what is the real culprit.

How do I prevent hair loss?

1. Be careful how you wear your hair

Too tight of a hairstyle can lead to something called traction alopecia, which simply means that the hair is being pulled out of the hair follicles. A tight ponytail, braids, cornrows or really any hairstyle can lead to hair loss. If the hair is being pulled and tugged at for a long period of time, this is a real risk. Avoid that by letting your hair loose often, keep changing your hairstyle, or just make that braid a loose one.

2. Eat the Right Food

To eat healthy and get enough nutrition is essential for maintaining a healthy hair growth. If you are worried about losing hair, make sure that you eat enough protein. The hair is mainly made up of a protein called keratin, so adding extra protein will have a good impact on your hair growth. Eggs contain both protein and biotin, the B vitamin that is vital for good hair. Meat and fish are also beneficial. If you are a vegetarian, make sure to eat enough beans and lentils, as well as nuts and seeds. Spinach and other leafy greens are also great hair food, as spinach contains folate and iron that boost your hair growth.

Eating nuts and seeds is really good for preventing or reversing hair loss, thanks to their high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.

3. Consider What Hair Products You Use and Avoid Heat Styling

Excessive heat styling will damage your hair and wear on it. If you do use heat styling tools, make sure to use a lower setting and not blast it on full heat. Always use a heat protecting spray or cream to prepare your hair for the heat. Hair products that contain a lot of chemicals will also dry your hair out. To prevent hair loss, use products with natural ingredients and keep your heated tools on the shelf.

4. Stress Less

Stress can cause hair loss, as can any trauma on the body or mind. Researchers do not yet know exactly why or how, but the stress hormone cortisol disrupts the hair’s natural growth cycle. If you are very stressed, you might shed more hair at one time than usual, which makes your hair look thinner. To avoid this and prevent stress related hair loss, practice mindfulness and maybe do yoga. It will have a positive impact on more aspects of your health than just your hair.

5. Do scalp massage

A scalp massage not only feels good but can also help aid your hair growth by increasing the blood circulation in your scalp, and therefore the flow of oxygen and blood to your hair follicles. This can also help you relax. Use an essential oil or coconut oil and massage it into your scalp with your fingers. If you leave it in overnight it will also give your hair and scalp an extra moisture boost.

6. Wash Your Hair Less Often

A new trend that has gained a lot of popularity is the no poo method. A lot of men and women have started washing their hair less often because it is less damaging for the hair. Using shampoo too often will strip the hair of its natural oils and make it dry. But washing it too seldom can also cause the pores in the scalp to clog and cause a product buildup. This could in turn cause dandruff. So, as with everything, find a balance that works for you. Three times a week might be a good place to start.

7. Avoid Certain Types of Medicine

Some types of medicine can lead to hair loss by interrupting the hair growth cycle. Drug-induced hair loss an occur, for example, from acne medicine, birth control pills, cholesterol-lowering drugs, or mood stabilizers. If you notice a change in your hair growth and you think it may be caused by a medication, talk to a doctor about taking alternative medications. Everyone experiences side effects in different ways and there might be a drug that would not have this effect on you.

8. Keep Your Scalp Healthy

A healthy scalp will result in healthy hair. What many people tend to forget is that hair products build up over time on our scalp. It is good for the hair to not wash it too often, but washing it too seldom will increase the product buildup. This can cause clogged follicles that can result in a fungus infection or dandruff. Doing a scalp exfoliation every now and then will deep cleanse your scalp and aid healthy hair growth.

9. Exercise

To prevent hair loss, stay healthy in general. Exercising and leading a healthy lifestyle is really important for your hair health. When you are stressed and the stress hormone cortisol is released into your body, it can cause hair loss. But exercise has, as we all know, a positive impact on our mental health and reduces stress. Also, sweating cleans out the pores in the scalp, while getting our heart rate up will increase the blood flow and brings more nutrients and oxygen into our body.

10. Additionally, Consider a Hair Supplement to Support Healthier Hair

If you want to take an extra step, or are already experiencing some hair thinning, you could opt for a natural hair supplement with natural ingredients that support your hair growth from within. These natural supplements are designed with hair in mind and target the potential triggers of hair thinning.
