Eating a Biotin Supplement for Improved Hair Growth – Is it Effective?

Biotin supplement

Biotin is one of the B vitamins that are essential for healthy hair and nails, and many choose to eat a biotin supplement in an effort to help strengthen their hair. But is it effective, and if so, why?

Biotin is a water soluble B vitamin, number B7 in the B vitamin complex. It helps create important enzymes in the body. Biotin is not only good for our hair and nails, but also for the skin, nerves, digestion and metabolism. It is often said to be the most important vitamin for our “beauty.”

How Does a Biotin Supplement Work?

Biotin makes sure the cells in the body rejuvenate, and that goes for the hair follicles and scalp as well. The faster the follicles and hair regenerate, the fuller your hair will look. Exactly how this works, is through the metabolism of the cells. Biotin will break down the protein we eat into different amino acids. These form keratin, the main building block of the hair. More keratin production means stronger and healthier hair.

Biotin will also improve the elasticity of the hair, which prevents breakage and dryness. That is the reason many hair care products contain biotin as an extra boost.

But you can also eat a biotin supplement to make the change happen from within. All hair growth supplements worth their name should include biotin as an ingredient.

Research on Biotin For Hair Growth

Biotin supplements
Biotin is vital for the health of our hair, nails, and cell metabolism.

There have been several studies on this issue and there is no question that our bodies need biotin for healthy hair growth. A 2015 study by Dr. Glynis Ablon involved 60 women with self-perceived hair loss, with a median age of 48.6 years. They were divided into two groups. One received an oral supplement containing biotin and zinc twice daily. The other group received a placebo supplement.

After three months, the results showed that the group that received the real supplement had an increased hair mass after 90 days of treatment, but the test group that received a placebo treatment did not. The first group also shed less hair during controlled hair washing than the placebo group. The results confirmed other studies showing similar results.

 Is This For Me?

As mentioned above, biotin supplements will benefit your hair growth through the cell reactions it enables. But it is not enough in and of itself to eat a biotin supplement to prevent all kinds of hair loss. Hair loss is a multifaceted issue that can have many different reasons. It can be hereditary, temporary, and for some people, unavoidable.

If you suffer from hair loss, it is important to get diagnosed. But if it seems temporary, or you just notice some hair thinning, biotin will always be beneficial for your hair. Eating a biotin supplement is, of course, recommended if you suffer from biotin deficiency. That shows through weak and brittle nails, thinning hair, and in some cases, muscle pain, skin changes, nausea or fatigue.

Dietary Sources of Biotin

However, it is not necessary to eat a supplement to get enough biotin. Biotin can also be found in food, most commonly in cauliflower, carrots, bananas, eggs, chicken, Swiss chard, nuts, salmon and dairy products.

Shampoo for Hair Loss – Does it Exist and Does it Work?

shampoo for hair loss

There are as many different ways to tackle hair loss as there are reasons for why it happens, but shampoo for hair loss is actually a scientifically proven method that is easy to try at home. The shampoo contains ketoconazole, which primarily is an antifungal medication that is commonly used for treating different kinds of infections.

What is Ketoconazole?

Ketoconazole first entered the medical market in 1981 and was then an oral drug. Today it is available in various topical treatments, like gel, creams and foams. But later, it was discovered that it could be used as a shampoo to treat hair loss.

Does it Work?

Shampoo for hair loss, most commonly ketoconazole, is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. But several studies show that it is effective in combating hair loss.

One study from 1998 and one from 2011 show that ketoconazole shampoos are effective in treating men suffering from pattern baldness, also called androgenetic alopecia. In the older study, researchers compared the shampoo to the FDA approved hair loss treatment minoxidil. The results showed that hair density, size and proportion in the test subjects were improved almost equally by both medications.

The results in the more recent study were also positive and showed that it helped hair growth. In that one, the subjects used a 2% shampoo once every two to four days. They left the shampoo on the scalp for three to five minutes before rinsing.

Shampoo containing ketoconazole can be effective in combating hair loss and scalp infections.

Why Shampoo for Hair Loss Works

Shampoo for hair loss is effective because the medication inhibits the 5R enzyme, which is what converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, DHT. DHT can cause pattern baldness, which can affect both men and women. Some hair follicles are extra sensitive to this male hormone, and can shrink up and eventually die, causing hair production to stop.

Fights infection

Another reason why ketoconazole shampoo is effective is its ability to fight infections. It is mainly used for treating dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, which causes dry and itchy skin, mainly on the scalp. In many cases, hair loss is caused by a fungus infection or yeast on the scalp.

When your scalp is dry and itchy, more often than not you tend to scratch it. The constant rubbing and friction of the dry scalp can cause the hairs to fall out. So if you solve the irritation of the scalp first, the problem with hair loss may also disappear.

Hair Supplements Can Make Your Hair Healthy

We recommend also taking a hair supplement to help support healthy hair. These supplements can help make your hair and body healthy from the inside out. Make sure to use one with natural ingredients that provide your hair with all the essential nutrients it needs!

Do-it-Yourself Hair Masks That Will Boost Your Hair Growth

hair mask

You know that you are supposed to use a hair mask every now and then to keep your hair healthy and good looking, but did you know you can make them yourself without spending a bunch of money? We have some recipes for easy DIY hair masks.

Avocado and Banana Mask

Whip up a yummy mask by mashing up a small, ripe banana, and a medium sized, ripe avocado. Add a tablespoon of olive oil and one tablespoon of wheat germ oil. Apply the mask all over your scalp and hair, focusing on the roots and tips. Leave the mixture in for about a half hour and then rinse out with cold water. Then wash your hair as usual.

Avocados contain a lot of vitamin E that is a great moisturizer and boosts the immune system. They also have good fats and oils that gives the hair shine. Bananas have a lot of potassium which is great to eat but also makes your hair soft and strong. Having potassium deficiency can actually lead to hair loss.

Egg Hair Masks

Eggs are full of protein and biotin, both of which are super important for healthy hair. Hair is mainly built up by the protein keratin. Many hair supplements contain biotin so adding some extra of these two vital ingredients may benefit your hair.

You can make different types of egg masks depending on what is in your kitchen, but the simplest one is to just whisk an egg with some drops of lemon juice. Then add the mixture to your scalp and hair and cover your head with a shower cap or towel. After 20 minutes, rinse it out with cold water – this is important so the egg does not cook in the shower! Then wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner.

Avocados are great for making homemade hair masks that will give your hair extra moisture.

Flaxseeds and Lemon Juice

This simple mask will promote thicker hair and could also be used as a styling gel. Leave a quarter cup of flaxseeds in water overnight. The next day, add two cups of water and bring it all to a boil. Once it starts to thicken, reduce the heat and squeeze in the juice of half a lemon. After a few minutes, take it off from the heat and let cool. To give it a nicer smell, add an essential oil of your choice. This will also moisturize your strands and give your hair a nice shine. Use it as an overnight mask or as a styling gel.

Flax seeds contain a lot of omega 3 fatty acids and also protein. This will give your hair volume and body, increase elasticity, and help fight off dandruff.

Onion Juice and Honey

Believe it or not, onion juice is actually good for your hair. This is believed to be because they contain high amounts of sulfur, which has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Hair loss is often caused by an unhealthy scalp or some kind of scalp fungus, so for people that have noticed hair loss, this could be a good remedy.

To make an onion hair mask, put the onion in a juicer and extract the liquids. Mix it with a few teaspoons of honey and apply the thin mixture to parts of your scalp where you have noticed hair loss or thinning. You can also add it to all of your scalp. Leave in overnight and then wash as usual, unless you want to smell like an onion at work.

Better Than Hair Masks

But the best tip to maintain a healthy head of hair is to simply eat and live well. If you are stressed for a period of time or feel that you need an extra boost, there are many natural hair supplements to take. As all the ingredients are natural and work together to achieve the same goal, you can rest easy knowing your hair is supported and healthy.

Onion Juice for Hair Growth: Does It Work?

Onion juice has gotten some hype lately on social media. The claim is that you can use onion juice for hair growth. But does onion for hair growth really work? Instead of wading through different websites about onion juice for hair loss, we did the research for you to find out if onion juice for hair loss really works.

Scientific Study Investigates Whether Onion Juice for Hair Growth Works

There’sone study published regarding onion juice for hair regrowth, “Onion juice (Allium cepa L.), a new topical treatment for alopecia areata,” which researched the effects of using onion juice or onion oil for hair growth.

In this study, patients with alopecia areata — a form of sudden hair loss in which one or more circular bald patches may overlap on the scalp — were divided into two groups. Group 1 was directed to apply onion juice to the scalp twice a day for two months, and Group 2 was advised to apply tap water to the scalp twice a day for two months.

After two weeks of treatment, notable effects were already taking place to demonstrate the efficacy of onion for hair growth. Regrowth of coarse hairs was observed in Group 1, and after four weeks, researchers observed regrowth in 86.9% of the group that was using onions for hair growth.

The researchers concluded that onion juice can be an effective therapy for patchy alopecia areata and to promote hair regrowth. In other words, onion juice for hair regrowth can be helpful.

Why is Onion Juice Effective Against Hair Loss?

Onion juice may seem to be an unlikely treatment to fight against hair loss, but these veggies actually have many natural benefits for hair. Onions are rich in sulfur, which has antibacterial and antifungal properties, so it’s effective at killing germs and parasites as well as helping heal fungal infections. Hair loss is often triggered by an unhealthy scalp, so it makes sense that sulfur-rich onion juice may be helpful for some causes of hair loss. Another benefit when applying it to the scalp is that onion juice helps to get rid of dandruff, which is usually fungal in nature. Onions also contain quercetin, an antioxidant that studies have shown may be useful in treating alopecia areata.

onion juice hair loss
Red onions are a richer source of quercetin than white, but ALL onions contain some.

How to Use Onion Juice on Your Hair

Want to try onion juice to see whether it helps your hair? Here’s how to get onion juice.

  1. Grate an onion and strain the pulp. You can strain it with a sieve, press it between two spoons, or squeeze it through cheesecloth. Throw away the pulp and use only the juice.
  2. Use a juicer. This is the easiest method and will give you the greatest amount of onion juice for you to work with.

Are there any onion juice for hair growth side effects? Possibly. After using onion juice, some people noticed their scalp has become red and itchy. This is why it’s important to test how you react to onion juice by applying it to a very small area before putting it all over your scalp. Onion juice is very strong, so avoid any broken skin or sore areas. If you’re still concerned about getting a reaction like this, try boiling chopped onions and using the water once it has cooled down, which is much milder than pure onion juice.

How About the Smell?

Onions do have a very strong smell but the smell is only intense during application. When the onion juice has been washed out, the smell is barely noticeable. But if the odor still lingers, there are a few things you can try to remove it:

How to Get the Most Out of Your Onion Juice Treatment

Massage onion juice into the scalp and leave it overnight if possible. If not, 30 minutes will do. Apply it as often as you can, like whenever you’re getting ready to wash your hair. It can take a few weeks before you see any results. You can also complement the treatment with some natural supplements like Nutrafol that don’t smell to support healthy hair growth. Combining the two treatments will ensure your hair is happy and healthy.

These are the juices that will help you further hair growth

hair growth

As we celebrate warmer and longer days, there is no better way to cool down than with a delicious juice. Whether you are choosing to drink the juice or apply it to your hair, this summer you should try at least one of these juices. Not only is this good for your health, but it also has a major impact on your hair. And on your hair growth. So keep an eye on these. And while you are at it, why not take the juice with some hair supplements as well? Nutrafol’s supplements are natural all the way.

Aloe vera juice

Aloe vera juice helps you prevent hair loss. How you may wonder? The vitamins present in aloe vera helps to make the hair strong and less prone to breakage. And the enzymes present in this juice helps to nourish and moisturize the scalp. Aloe vera also helps you to get rid of dandruff and itchy scalp. But do not only drink it – apply it to the hair as well. You will get more lustrous and softer hair.

Kiwi juice

Enriched with vitamin E, kiwi juice will make your hair grow faster, but make sure to apply it only from time to time. Kiwi juice enhances the immune system, and a strong immune system minimizes hair fall. Kiwi juice helps in cleaning your hair and should, to get the best results, be diluted before application to reduce its acidity.

Onion juice

It might not be the best-smelling juice to apply on to your hair, but onion juice does enhance growth and prevents the appearance of white hair. Onions provide high concentrations of sulfur, which provides a proper nourishment and flow to the follicles. And nourished follicles will make your hair grow faster.

Spinach juice

Spinach as we know it, is highly enriched with various minerals, vitamins and iron. And this is not only beneficial for your skin, but also for your hair. So if you have an itchy scalp or if your hair is starting to thin, try some spinach juice. Spinach is highly concentrated with vitamin B which restores shine and promotes growth.

Garlic juice

Another not so good-smelling juice to apply, but a treatment that has been used for longer than anyone can remember. Garlic juice helps in restoring the quality of the hair and supplies nourishment to the follicles. When applied, it increases the flow of blood towards the scalp. Your hair will have improved lustre and feel smoother.

hair growth
Choose one of these healthy juices for better hair growth. Drink it or apply it to your hair directly – a real vitamin bomb.

Cucumber juice

Drink a glass every day for healthier hair. Not only does cucumber help hair growth but it also improves the quality of your hair. The enzymes help in preventing the loss of hair and enhances the circulation of hemoglobin to the cells and the follicles of the hair.

Coriander juice

Cilantro, or coriander as it is also called, helps in enhancing hair growth and fights against hair fall. If you are not a big coriander fan, you can just add a little in any other drink. Or if you do not want to drink it, crush the leaves and make a paste out of it. The paste should be applied for an hour and then washed off with cold water.

Carrot juice

We have all heard the benefits of carrots and how they are enriched with beta-carotene. But did you know that this same beta-carotene also provides lustre and color to the hair? The follicles of the hair tend to strengthen and it restores the quality of hair. This vitamin C enriched vegetable also helps in providing nourishment towards the scalp.

Hyaluronic Acid – An Important Natural Ingredient for Hair

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is naturally occurring in the body, mainly as a fluid in the eyes and joints, but it is also a frequently used ingredient in skin products. And it can also be used to promote a healthy scalp and increased hair growth.

The Joints’ Natural Lubricant

Hyaluronic acid works as a kind of cushion or lubricant, making the joints move smoother and other tissues in the body work properly. In skin products, it is known for its moisturizing properties. Therefore it can be used to treat skin burns or wounds. In the U.S., the FDA has approved use of it during eye surgeries, mouth sores and joint pain. It is even used as a lip filler during plastic surgery.

The acid, also known as HA, works together with collagen to keep our skin moisturized and elastic. When we age, our bodies produce less of these substances, which is what causes our skin to look aged and starting to wrinkle.

What Hyaluronic Acid Does For Your Hair

Hyaluronic Acid

The skin on our scalp has two main layers – epidermis, which is the outer layer, and the dermal layer, which is deeper. That is where the hair follicle sits, and this tissue contains a gel-like fluid that is partially comprised of hyaluronic acid. It moisturizes the scalp from within and prevents hair from falling out prematurely from the hair follicles. If you have a dry scalp, using a shampoo and conditioner containing HA could be a good idea. According to dermatologist Dr. Paradi Mirmirani, HA definitely benefits the hair as it works like a fertilizer. Not only can it increase hair growth, but also increases the diameter of each hair, giving your hair more volume. It can be ingested but also injected or applied topically. It is unclear which method is the most effective.

How Do I Get HA?

Dr. Ron Moy, a dermatologist and Senior Vice President of the Skin Cancer Foundation, says that HA molecules are too big to penetrate the skin. That means creams containing HA are great for moisturizing the surface of the skin, but not to penetrate it to fight actual wrinkles. That is when an injection may have better effect.

But if you want to avoid needles, save money, and use a way that doesn’t require regular maintenance, taking HA orally or topically is a better option. Many targeted supplements contain HA.

There is HA in some foods; like leafy greens, root vegetables and soy products. Scientists still do not know how, or whether, much of HA our bodies take up when we eat it. But it never hurts to eat some extra vegetables anyway. A healthy diet will benefit all aspects of our health.

How Sulfate Free Shampoo Benefits Your Hair

sulfate free shampoo

You may have heard of sulfate free shampoo and that using shampoo without sulfate can be beneficial for your hair and beauty regimen, but why? To better understand why sulfate free shampoo may be best for your hair, you should know what is sulfate free shampoo, what do sulfates in shampoo do to your hair and what are the benefits of sulfate free shampoo?

Sulfates 101: What Are Sulfates?

Sulfates are a type of cleansers that are highly effective at removing dirt and oil from the hair and body. They usually appear on the ingredients list of a beauty product as sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate, and can be found in the formula for most rinse off beauty products, including shampoos, face wash, body wash, soaps and more.

Clean hair sounds like a great thing, so you may think having sulfates in your shampoo is good. But while sulfates are good at cleaning, they can have some drawbacks if you have certain types of skin or hair. Sulfate shampoos are considered safe when used briefly and rinsed out thoroughly, but some people may have reactions such as redness or skin rash if they’re sensitive to sulfates. Let’s take a look at some of the problems a shampoo formulated with sulfates can cause.

Side Effects of Sulfates in Shampoo

There are sometimes where shampoo that contains sulfates can be damaging to your hair and body. Here’s a closer look at those symptoms, which may also answer: Why use sulfate free shampoo?

  • Scalp irritation: Sulfates are known to irritate the skin. When applied as a detergent on your scalp, they remove oil, but they remove this oil so effectively that they can actually strip away your scalp’s protective layer too. With a compromised barrier to your scalp, it’s very easy for harmful bacteria to get in and for needed moisture to get out. This can leave your scalp dry, itchy and more sensitive.
  • Dry hair: Your scalp isn’t the only thing that suffers. Sulfates can also affect your hair. You may compromise healthy and glossy hair if you use sulfate-laden shampoo because the sulfate gets rid of oil so well that it strips away some of your hair’s natural moisture and shine. The effect is compounded if you have already have dry and curly or frizzy hair that already has difficulty retaining moisture.
  • Fading color: The same principle with sulfates drying out your hair also applies to its effect on hair that has been dyed or otherwise colored. Sulfates strip the color from your hair, undoing the effects of your hair dye and causing your hair color to fade more quickly or appear dull.
  • Hair loss: The research isn’t fully conclusive on whether sulfates in shampoo directly cause hair loss, but there have been some claims that sulfates can contribute to hair loss, thinning and shedding indirectly, by causing inflammation of the scalp. It makes sense that by compromising the scalp, sulfates impact its ability to effectively grow healthy hair.

It may be a good idea for you to use a sulfate free shampoo if you have sensitive skin, dry hair, naturally curly hair, dyed/colored hair or you want to take every precaution to avoid the possibility of indirectly contributing to hair loss.

For better-looking hair, try a sulfate free shampoo and experience the difference.

Sulfate Free Shampoo Benefits

So should you use a shampoo without sulfates? The answer is yes! Switching to a sulfate free shampoo is always beneficial for your hair. Sulfate free shampoo not only preserves natural oils on your scalp and hair, but also is a more color safe option for hair that has been dyed.

Two potential drawbacks you may experience when you switch to sulfate free shampoo involve the way it lathers (or rather, doesn’t) and how effectively it removes dirt and oil if you have hair that tends to get very oily. Sulfates cause shampoo to lather well, and because they’re such powerful cleansers, they more easily remove dirt and oil from hair.

If you miss the lather or don’t think your hair is getting as clean as you’re used to, give your hair some time to adjust to your sulfate free shampoo routine. As with everything else related to hair and beauty, it can take time for you to see results. Be patient and you’ll start to see your hair feels and looks much better after switching to a sulfate free shampoo and start seeing the sulfate free shampoo benefits in action.

Want to see even more positive changes for your hair when switching to sulfate free products? Try taking natural hair growth supplements to get healthier, stronger and thicker hair.

Resveratrol benefits that will help you with unhealthy hair

Reservstol benefits

Nutrafol recently covered topics such as “What is resveratrol?” and what nutrients contain the substance. So, it should come as no surprise that the next article our resveratrol series is about resveratrol’s benefits.

What are the benefits of resveratrol?

In a previous article, we discussed that for people experiencing hair loss associated with aging, using resveratrol supplements can help. But how exactly does this work?

A study made 2011 in Archives of Biochemistry & Biophysics found that resveratrol was shown to have many therapeutic effects on diseases and disorders. This including those diseases of the skin.
Resveratrols function when it comes to the skin is that it helps to protect it. It protects skin from damage and shows promise in addressing issues related to skin aging. Which is why resveratrol is so wittily referred to as the pharmaceutical fountain of youth.

Now, you may wonder what all this jabbing about skin and skin diseases have to do with resveratrol and hair. You see, hair follicles are located within the dermis, one layer of the organ that is your… that is right, your skin.

So overall poor health of the skin will impact the ability of the hair follicle to function normally. A condition that can lead to thinning hair or even hair loss. The role resveratrol plays in promoting healthy skin is one of the contributions it makes in the body’s ability to grow hair

reservstol benefits
Did you know that one of the benefits of resveratrol is that it can help maintain healthy hair? So make sure to take supplements with this substance.

And another study…

…released in 2013 made by the Oxford Journal studied the link between resveratrol and improvements in cardiometabolic health. One of many resveratrol benefits that this study did highlight was the potential for improved endothelial function. Endothelial, you may ask? Endothelial function. You see, suffering from an endothelial dysfunction, may have serious effects on your wellness. Meaning that this could cause reduced blood flow to the hair follicles. Which can lead to a reduction in its ability to stimulate continued growth of the hair. And we all know that blood flow to the hair follicles is incredibly important for the survival of the hair.

Wrapping it up

The resveratrol benefits are…

  • Improves overall cardiovascular health, which promotes full body wellness
  • Reduces the effect of age-related issues which includes age-related hair issues
  • Improves overall health and reduces effects of underlying issues related to unhealthy hair
  • Improves endothelial function which can help promote blood flow to the hair follicles which is important if you want your hair to grow

Our 5 Best Everyday Tips For How to Get Longer Hair

how to get longer hair

Are you also wondering how to get longer hair for the summer? Have you been trying to grow a flow of hair but cannot seem to achieve it? We have some great everyday tips for how to get longer hair, without going to any extremes. Common sense and some extra care could take you far.

Trim the Ends

Begin with a fresh start and trim your ends. It will make the hair look fresh and well taken care of. It will also make sure the split ends do not spread further up in the hair and make it even worse. Experts recommend a trim every six to eight weeks, but it depends on your hair type and quality.

When you have fresh ends, make sure to remember to moisturize to keep them healthy for as long as possible. A moisturizing conditioner and a hair mask on a regular basis will make sure the hair gets what it needs. Also moisturize from within by drinking enough water – and not sugary drinks like soda. A scalp massage with an essential oil or coconut oil will also increase the blood circulation in the scalp, and make your hair take up all the nutrients and moisture it needs.

how to get longer hair
Using heating tools on your hair will make it age faster. Save the curling iron for special occasions to help keep your hair quality good!

Take Care of the Hair You Have

The best tips for how to get longer hair is to take good care of the hair you already have – so that it stays healthy. If the hair gets nutrients and you do not wear it out too much, it will not fall off, break or slow its growth. The most stressful action we can expose our hair to is heat styling. Most of us are guilty of blow-drying our hair, and at least every once in a while, use a straightener or a curling iron. But try to minimize these occasions, and always use a heat protectant before. Do not use the hottest setting – a lower temperature is often enough, unless you have extremely thick or coarse hair. When you wash your hair the next time, use a hair mask and let the hair rest for a while.

Go Natural

Try to avoid hair products with harsh chemicals. Today there are plenty of natural shampoos and conditioners on the market. More chemicals will strip your hair of its natural oils and is also bad for the environment. By the way, you can also wash your hair less often than you think. How often depends on your hair type, but everything between three and seven days is common. And as mentioned above, try to let the hair air dry when possible.

How to Get Longer Hair? Eat Well, and Maybe Some Supplements

You are what you eat, so if you eat a healthy and well balanced diet, it will show. Your hair needs protein, it’s the main building block of the hair. Enough protein makes the hair strong. Getting all the different vitamins and minerals will also nourish the hair from the inside and make it more shiny and healthy looking. If you are stressed or for some reason cannot eat a varied, healthy diet, natural supplements are an option. These could help provide your hair with all the necessary nutrients and give it an extra boost in times of need.

Castor Oil – 5 Incredible Benefits You Should Know About

Nutrafol | Castor oil

Castor oil is derived from the castor beans seed and is a colorless, odorless and tasteless vegetable oil. It grows naturally in Eastern Africa. Traditionally it has been used to treat constipation, but it also has a ton of beauty benefits. Do you prefer to use natural remedies to get beautiful hair and skin? – Then you should try castor oil!

How to Use Castor Oil

Castor Oil and Hair Growth

Thanks to its high concentration of vitamin E, Omega-6 fatty acids and protein, castor oil is great for aiding healthy hair growth. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that builds and repairs tissue in the body. The omega-6 fat acids are vital for our health and we need to get them from food. They support hair and skin growth, bone health, metabolism and our reproductive system. You will find them in most vegetable oils. Protein is also important for hair growth. As the hair is made up of the protein keratin, a protein rich diet will help our body produce it and thus strengthen our hair. To get the most out of your castor oil, massage it into your scalp. Also apply it on hair strands. You can also mix it with another oil, such as coconut oil. Leave it on over night and wash your hair the next morning.

castor oil
Castor oil makes our hair shiny, strong and promotes hair growth. It is also healthy for your skin.

It Also Fights Scalp Infection

Castor oil has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties that can help your immune system fight scalp infections. Massaging it into your scalp and leaving it overnight will help treat conditions like dandruff. Thanks to this, it can also help with joint and muscle pain. Native Americans have traditionally consumed it to help relieve lower back pain.

A Great Oil to Fight Split Ends

There are many types of oils that you can use to help fight split ends, but as castor oil has so many other health benefits, why not use that? Apply it to the ends of your hair after showering or whenever you feel dried up. The oil will naturally moisturize your strands, help prevent breakage and make the hair soft and shiny.

General Moisturizer

As a natural and healthy oil derived, castor oil is a great moisturizer for both hair and skin. It is an oil that will easily penetrate your skin, thus providing your hair with moisture from the inside. Make a hair mask by massaging your whole head with castor oil, or adding some to your conditioner or leave-in conditioner. Some tips say to add it to lemon juice and honey, or coconut oil. You can either apply this mixture to your hair before washing it, or leave it overnight. The oil will have the same effect on your skin, so you can apply it to your whole body.

Get Thick Eyelashes and Eyebrows With Castor Oil

It is unclear whether there is any research on this one, but there are many testimonies out there that castor oil helps thicken eyebrows and eyelashes. As it contains ingredients that are beneficial for hair growth, therefore it is not that far fetched to believe it. Many beauty suppliers have castor oil specifically for applying on eyelashes and brows. It could be a cheaper and easier way of achieving longer lashes than having an extension. You can get a cheap bottle of organic castor oil and use an old mascara brush, after cleaning it. Then apply the oil to the base of the lashes and wear it overnight. For the brows, just massage it into them like you do with the scalp. Next morning, use a make up remover or water and wash it all off. Just be careful to not get any oil in your eyes, as some people can have allergic reactions to castor oil. Try a little bit on your arm before applying anywhere else.

The Importance Of a Healthy Overall Lifestyle

Even though there are many amazing oils, vitamins and remedies, the most important thing to achieve a healthy hair growth is to be healthy overall. Eating a lot of vegetables and healthy fats will give your skin glow and make your hair shine. Natural supplements can help fulfill your diet. Exercise is also important to get your heart rate up and your metabolism going. Drinking water will moisturize you from the inside out, and it will show in your hair and your skin. Once you manage keeping up a healthy lifestyle, the miracle oils and remedies will have much more effect.
