It happened first during her daily FaceTime with her mother: Kaneez ran her fingers through her hair, a force of habit—but when she pulled away, she saw strands of hair in her hand.
“It shocked me,” she says. “It was such an uncomfortable feeling; you feel like you’re losing pieces of yourself.”
When perimenopause began, Kaneez noticed shedding. It was subtle at first, but as time went on she was seeing more and more hair in the shower and hairbrush. “It’s scary, honestly,” she says. “You feel like you’re out of control.”
When Kaneez showed her mom, she said it was just another part of getting older. But Kaneez refused to accept that as an answer. “That day made me realize that my body was changing—and I needed to do something about it.”
