To Serafia, her hair has always been an essential part of who she is. “It’s my crown, my mane, my lioness mane,” she laughs.
From childhood to now, and all the places between, she’s worn her hair in many styles: from a bleached pixie, to a short afro, long braids, and curly tresses. “As women—as people—however you express yourself, you can use your hair as the biggest expression,” she says.
Her hair is also a visible expression of her multiracial heritage. Serafia is adopted and of mixed race heritage. “I have 3 different continents in my bloodline,” she says. “My hair is an expression of each piece of me, each part of my DNA.”
