The Adaptogen Effect: Stress and Your Body

By Lindsey Epley2024-05-30

What are adaptogens?

To start with adaptogens, it might be worthwhile to start with Ayurveda—a 5,000-year-old practice that, in Sanskrit, can be interpreted as “the science of life.”1 Science, at Nutrafol, is the foundation for everything we do. So, it would make sense that we looked to Ayurveda to explore the vast array of adaptogens well-known to this ancient practice—one that is designed to promote health and wellness through a whole-body approach.

Adaptogens are plant extracts known for their ability to enhance the body’s response to physical and environmental stressors.2 They have been used throughout human history for a variety of issues, for everything from illness recovery to supporting memory.2

Fun fact: As recently as 50 years ago, the professional sports industry began to focus its attention on adaptogens, especially due to their potential for increasing the body’s resistance to stress and for the ways they aided and improved physical endurance.2

The science behind adaptogens.

At Nutrafol, we’re big fans of science—so much so that we built our entire brand on it. What we realized: Without unlocking the science behind hair thinning, millions of people would continue to suffer. For us, what mattered most, and what we knew would deliver results, was identifying and creating formulations that address key root causes of hair thinning.

Our formulas feature high-quality ingredients like standardized vitamins, minerals, and botanicals, including adaptogens that work with your body. We continuously evolve our formulations based on the latest science and available technologies. Our Booster Nutraceuticals reflect advancements in ingredient research and technologies to best support root causes of hair thinning.

Here are some of the adaptogens we use and why we use them:

  • Ashwagandha: A botanical shown to lower cortisol levels for stress-relieving benefits to reduce hair shedding.  Found in Nutrafol Women, Women’s Balance, Men, and Men 50+ Hair Growth Nutraceuticals.

  • Shatavari:  An ancient adaptogen for postpartum women to reduce physical and emotional stress and balance the body and hair growth cycle. Found in Nutrafol Postpartum Hair Growth Nutraceutical.

  • Astragalus Extract: An adaptogenic herb standardized to polysaccharides in our formulation. Found in + Resilience Stress Nutraceutical.

Stress, adaptogens, and beyond.

While adaptogens may be most famous for their association with reducing stress, we want to address this key root cause of hair thinning from multiple angles. That is how we formulated our + Resilience Stress Nutraceutical, a Booster Nutraceutical designed to complement your Hair Growth Nutraceutical and provide targeted support to the root cause of stress.

+ Resilience is formulated with standardized ingredients that support regulation of the body's stress response for daily stress resilience. These include the adaptogenic herb Astragalus Extract, standardized to polysaccharides, L-Theanine, and Lemon Balm Extract. These ingredients are clinically studied to support the body’s stress response, help the body manage mental stress, and promote overall well-being to address the daily stressors that impact hair health.
