Similar to the gut or skin microbiome, the scalp microbiome is a complex ecosystem of microbes that work to support and shield the scalp. Made up of a diverse range of bacteria and fungi, a healthy, balanced scalp microbiome defends against toxins and hair damage.
The scalp microbiome acts as a protective barrier, and in order to function properly, it requires healthy diversity—or, a balance of good and bad bacteria and fungi.
Too little or too much diversity can cause an imbalance in sebum production and pH, which makes the scalp microbiome susceptible to environmental stressors like pollution and product build-up. The result? Oily or dry, flaky, itchy, redness, irritation, and even hair damage.
